A couple of days ago, my dear friend Alex (@AgentCoco) and I had the privilege of speaking to middle school students at Cambridge Friends School in Boston. Though I haven't visited an elementary, middle, or high school before, primarily because of the divisiveness of LGBT issues within the public school system, I was honest with the students and told them that I was more nervous about speaking to them than most audiences because of my unpleasant middle school years, which were filled with bullying. --------------------------------------------------- I am proud to say that it was one of the most memorable experiences I've ever had. These students, who showed me nothing but compassion and acceptance, give me so much hope for future generations. I told them that while growing up in Montana, I had always wished LGBT history had been part of the curriculum; it would not only have made me feel less alone and help me better understand myself, but also would have helped my peers understand and accept others' differences. --------------------------------------------------- I believe society could benefit exponentially if all schools incorporated the practices and principles of CFS, especially within elementary and middle schools. Schools need to focus more on social justice and providing a meaningful education that encourages young people to challenge oppression and gives them a better understanding of the world.
