Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | Located in an immense system of WWI tunnels at Butte de Vauquois. These objects on the table were lying on the ground and were simply put back on the table by the volunteers in the Association that cares for this place.
There are 17 kilometers of German tunnels and 7 kilometers for French tunnels that remain. In between the two front lines are massive craters caused by explosive charges being placed under the opposing army’s front line. There was once a village with a church and shops that sat atop Butte de Vauquois. But now it is a moonscape...a powerful visual example of the immensity of modern mass destruction.
