Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | Located in a large underground city under the town of Arras in Northern France, at one point it was occupied by 24,000 Commonwealth soldiers. This sign pointing to the latrine was probably drawn by New Zealand troops. Nearby are street signs which name parts of the underground city after actual towns in New Zealand (Blenheim, Nelson & Wellington). Part of this underground city is open to the public. It is known in Arras as the Wellington Quarry. It is one of two WWI underground cities in France that are open to the public. It is remarkably well-done and a place that I can highly recommend for a visit.
