Photo by @ChrisBickford @National Geographic Travel. Although the surface of the inland lagoon system that separates the Outer Banks from mainland North Carolina covers over 2,000 square miles, the lagoon's depth rarely reaches more than 10 feet, making it a particularly dangerous body of water to navigate. Place a teaspoon of water onto a 12" dinner plate, blow lightly, and you get the idea. The Roanoke Marshes Light was built in the late 19th century to guide intracoastal traffic through one of the most hazardous sections of this inland waterway, where a narrow channel cut through a series of waist-deep marshes . The original structure is long gone, but a replica now graces the waterfront of the town of Manteo, serving as one of many tributes to the storied maritime history of the #OuterBanks. #MarshesLight @natgeocreative
