For the past four years over first week of March a group of vets convenes in Hyalite Canyon, Montana to ice climb and winter camp. The men and women who join us are on average two decades younger than I am and have the distinction of having served in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2003. The chance to meet up, revisit the camaraderie of a shared experience, and let go of self recrimination for a week is special. They endured much for the benefit of many. While in Washington DC @jenniloweanker and I strolled through the Mall on a warm Sunday afternoon. We toured the memorials, which gave us a chance to reflect on each of these chapters in the history of the US. We visit these places to make peace with conflict. Walking through these communal places of the @nationalparkservice is humbling. Be it the Civil War at the Lincoln Memorial, the state and territory tribute to WW II, the moving mountains Civil Rights tribute to MLK and the engraved Vietnam Memorial, pictured here, we learn and remember. Vietnam was a conflict I experienced through a b/w TV and my parents view of the world. At eight and nine I was more interested in putting cards in the spokes of my bike than a war half way around the globe. As I came of age I learned more about this conflict through the written word. I can only imagine how desperately horrific war is. My heart is with those that sacrificed their lives and to those that serve. If we create a global community we have compassion for others. Yeah, I'm naive. I get that. Yet wouldn't it be nice if we didn't have violence? #respect
