Four bullets pierced the screen on the front door at Julia Rhoden’s house in Chicago, where @ニューヨーク・タイムズ photographer @heislerphoto took this picture on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. The night before, one round had flown through the living room, penetrating the bedroom wall and striking Julia. In #Chicago, violence has long been concentrated along blocks like the one where Julia lives, a world away from the glimmering downtown skyline. Darryl Edwards Sr., a neighbor awakened by the shots, estimates there have been gunshots on the block about 10 times since he moved in 3 years ago. “You get some gunshots every day in some neighborhoods — every day,” he said. “So I say 10 in 3 years, that ain’t too bad.” Julia is one of 64 people shot in Chicago over the course of 3 days on Memorial Day weekend. Six of the shooting victims died. Although the bullet is still lodged in her back, Julia is confident that she’ll recover. We'll be following the shooting cases from Memorial Day weekend over the course of the year.
