About 140,000 stateless Rohingya, have lived in camps in Rakhine State since an eruption of violence between its majority Buddhist community and Muslims in 2012 left more than 100 people dead and dozens of villages reduced to ashes. Conditions in the camps are grim, with overcrowding, limited access to healthcare, education and job opportunities, restrictions on movement, a lack of proper sanitation, and deteriorating buildings, many which were built as temporary shelters. In August 2016, the government of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who had been criticised for not speaking out forcefully against the persecution of the Rohingya, named former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to head an advisory commission aimed at seeking solutions to what it called the “complicated issues” in Rakhine State. #Sittwe #Rohingya #Myanmar #MagnumFoundation #EmergencyFund #MagnumPhotos #cccontheroad
