What IS that?! This photo of @smithsoniansms’ first director, Dr. Mary Rice, is brought to you by #WomeninScienceWednesday and #WhatisitWednesday. Dr. Rice is examining one of her favorite animals (and the subject of much of her research), a peanut worm!
Dr. Rice studies how marine invertebrates, like peanut worms, change throughout their lives. Just like frogs begin their lives as tadpoles, most marine invertebrates (like crabs or oysters) begin life in different forms before metamorphosing into adults. Dr. Rice received her first biology degree in 1947 and can still be found pursuing her passion at the Smithsonian Marine Station nearly 70years later. #marinebiologist
