A curious (and perhaps hungry?) fish watches as @smithsoniansms head scientist, Dr. Valerie Paul, conducts an experiment to study chemical defenses in algae. Many marine organisms produce chemical compounds for a whole host of reasons—to protect themselves, to find a mate, or to defend territory. Here, Dr. Paul has incorporated a compound extracted from algae to see if it deters hungry herbivores from eating it.
Why care about chemical compounds in algae and other marine organisms? For one, natural compounds found in marine organisms may be used to create medicines that help fight diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s. #WomeninScienceWednesday #marinebiologist
