My coach and I were recently watching film of me blocking, and he told me a story.

Back when he was playing, a middle blocker friend of his had been struggling with blocking. So, their coach pulled the player over to a gym wall, threw a ball against it several times, and asked him what he saw. The player responded that the ball always bounced back. Correct, said the coach. Then the coach instructed the player to stand there for an hour, stare at the wall, study it, and see what it did. After an hour, the coach came back and asked him what he saw. The player said he had stood there and watched the wall intently. But he saw nothing. It never moved. It was just a wall.

Exactly, said the coach. The wall never moves. It just sits there being a wall. And that's what makes it a perfect block.

Moral of the story: I need to be a wall.
