What do you get when you combine math, coral and crochet? Art that gets people excited about saving the environment. Australian sisters Margaret and Christine Wertheim combined their love of STEM and the Great Barrier Reef to create a participatory art project highlighting global warming’s impact on the ocean. Where does crochet fit in? The sisters wanted to find a hands-on way to engage people with mathematical principles. Reef organisms are a living example of geometric structures, and crocheting them is a fun and tactile way to experience geometry. “The highest levels of abstraction – things like mathematics, computing, and logic – can be engaged not just through purely cerebral algebraic methods, but by physically playing with ideas,” says Margaret.
