On Tuesday, @samuelhodgson photographed the Brooklyn United Marching band practicing at United Methodist Church, next door to a new men’s shelter in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Parents of children in the band are concerned about security. The groups that will operate the new shelter have promised that the men will be employed and screened. But residents are doubtful. Although @nycmayor Bill de Blasio can boast about a lower crime rate, his administration has failed to curb the rise in homelessness. Under a plan announced last week, the mayor will be seeking buy-in to open 90 new shelters throughout NYC over the next 5 years to accommodate a record 60,000 people currently in the city’s primary shelter system.
