The Ecology of Being Asian Asians can grow everywhere. We are the descendants of the dragon and the dragon has spread its wings far and wide. Azn-Americans/Europeans/Australians/Africans, plug and play any continent and it works. Anywhere we go, we never seem to forget our roots, but in nature a transplant that holds on too tightly onto their roots can be often seen as an invasive species. I met some new friends from China attending Sydney university at the moment. They love it here, the sun, the sea, the environment. The people? In the 2 years they've been here, they haven't made any local friends. Why? Answer: No time, no chance, nothing in common. So I asked, why have they come to study abroad? Answer: To experience local culture, make local friends, learn the local language...hmmm, so why haven't things panned out? They felt the locals would make fun of the way they talked and their interests. Why did they feel this way? 不自信,insecurity, is the conclusion they eventually arrived at. When I left them, they were still in deep discussion amongst themselves about what they've done these past 2 years. Maybe it's time to take responsibility for the environment you placed yourself in and stop blaming others for being too different. We chose to travel and explore but not as invaders aiming to take over. We are here to enrich the soil and add to the ecology of the cultural tapestry with our food, our thoughts and our quirks. Adapt and thrive. How? I have some ideas...

The Ecology of Being Asian

Asians can grow everywhere.
