Welcome to the “wetland of the future,” a #ChesapeakeBay marsh where our scientists are fast-forwarding to the year 2100.

Wetlands protect homes from flooding, filter out pollution, shelter biodiversity and can even build soil to keep pace with a rise in sea level. But their fate as climate change accelerates remains uncertain.

At the Global Change Research Wetland, scientists add carbon dioxide and nitrogen to plastic-covered chambers like this to see how plants grow, and how quickly they can build soil. In some places, scientists are even raising temperatures.
