[swipe ??] Mount Koya, a temple complex built in 816 by a saintly priest named Kukai as the center of the Tantric Buddhist sect Shingon Mikkyo, is today referred to as the Japanese Lhasa. Although more modern in its appearance, with convenience stores, boutique coffee shops, and tour buses, the farthest one goes into the mountain’s quiet incense filled forests, the feeling of being on a Buddhist pilgrimage remains. Many shrines originally dating from medieval Japan can be found, and visitors can experience a day in the life of a monk by spending the night at a temple lodging, also knwon as “shukubō” in Japanese.
