Japan’s street skateboarding team showed they are a force to be reckoned with ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics. At the Street World Championship 2023, held in Tokyo at Ariake Arena, the nation’s young skaters claimed nine of the 16 finalist spots and five out of six medals.

Progressing towards his second Olympics, Sora Shirai won the men’s title, while Yumeka Oda, aiming for her Olympic debut, secured the women’s championship.

Japan’s podium dominance included Kairi Netsuke and Yuto Horigome, with 13-year-old Ginwoo Onodera ranking second nationally. Despite the fact that he is still recovering from a hip injury, Olympic champion Horigome advanced in global rankings.

Momiji Nishiya, another Tokyo Olympic gold medalist, earned world championship bronze.

Other Japanese skaters, such as Liz Akama, Funa Nakayama, Coco Yoshizawa and Miyu Ito, also proved that the country is hotbed of skateboarding talent.
