14 December 2017 :: Jimmy catches me ascending the second pitch of the final headwall on Ulvetanna, Queen Maud Land, Antarctica. The rock in this range is particularly abrasive. Perhaps it’s the atmospheric weathering of wind and temperature over thousands of years. One might surmise sharp rock is solid rock. Contrary to experience, we found the opposite. On our climb of Ulvetanna we had to practice dialed rope management. Each pitch would require two coils and seconding a length of rope entailed keeping a stack clipped to our harnesses. The age old Yosemite refrain of “money in the bank” turned into a bit of humor. A stacked, cared for rope is like $€£¥ that you can count on. In this case Jimmy and I used two @bluewaterropes for our climb. One 70 m 9.1 mm Icon Double Dry Dynamic and one 80 m 9 mm Canyonator Static. Even with attention to detail we had to use cotton athletic tape to patch up rope gobies.
Every now and then, while shivering away at the belay, I would run worse case #goatfarms through my mind. What would we do if.... we dropped a rope? .... if the rope was cut? It keeps you alert to think of #SNAFU scenarios and it is also a good way to mitigate risk.
