Alternate reality games have been gaining popularity in Japan in recent years, and the event management company Scrap Corp. operates 15 live-action game facilities in Japan, including Tokyo Mystery Circus. Some games are available in English. The concept was first created in 2007 after a college student who had been taking part in a brainstorming session with Scrap employees revealed how she enjoyed playing a digital escape game.
