As the list of endangered animals worldwide grows longer, society may soon be faced with an impossible decision: which ones to take off life support. While on assignment for @nytmag, @spencer_lowell photographed a pair of 9-day-old akikiki chicks that were hatched at an egg-rearing house on #Kauai, a 500-square-mile island in the middle of the Pacific. Of the 1,280 endangered animals and plants listed by the @usfws, 557 are from Hawaii. Conservationists have called the islands “the extinction capital of the world.” Lisa Crampton, who’s head of the Kauai Forest Bird Recovery Project, has been tasked with saving the #akikiki — along with the rest of the island’s #endangered birds. Because akikiki numbers have dropped so rapidly — the population is estimated to have fallen by 83% in 10 years, leaving just 468 birds — the government approved a plan to start a captive-breeding program in 2015.
