Photograph by Michael Yamashita @Michael Yamashita - So here I am on China’s Grand Canal, the world’s longest man made waterway, along which Marco Polo often traveled as an emissary for the emperor. I’m shooting one of the towline bridges where, in Marco’s day, coolies pulled barges up the canal against the current. It’s sunset. As the sun drops behind the city, what are the chances that several hundred yards away someone carrying irrigation buckets would just happen to walk into my frame at what Cartier-Bresson would call “the decisive moment”? I was there with my longest lens already on a tripod to capture this moment. It doesn’t get any luckier than this!
