Maya script panel in Naj Tunich Cave, Guatemala photo by @salvarezphoto (Stephen Alvarez) | The Maya of Central America had a writing system based on an elaborate set of glyphs. It is a logosyllabic system where individual glyphs can represent either words or syllables. It is the only Mesoamerican writing system that has been significantly deciphered. Most Maya script is carved on buildings and monuments throughout the ancient Maya world but pieces of it have also been found underground. These glyphs survive deep inside the Maya pilgrimage site of Naj Tunich in the Peten department of Guatemala. Naj Tunich was heavily vandalized in the 1980s but is now well protected by the Guatemalan Government. Luckily these glyphs survived, many others did not.
