Calligraphers Soufu Honda and Yuyushi Furuta put kanji at the center of their art. For the past 10 years Honda has worked independently of any "shodō ryuha" (school of calligraphy), doing work on commission. She uses her entire body to express the feeling of the kanji, a process that verges on the theatrical. And 78-year-old Furuta has spent her career creating art on paper, of course, but also creating logos for companies and carving signs that adorn historical monuments. Read their interviews on The Japan Times website. (Katherine Whatley photos)
