Friday Night Eclipse. Photo by @babaktafreshi
The World at Night project
The longest total lunar eclipse in the 21st century is coming, this Friday night. Except for Central & North America, most other parts of the world can see a lunar eclipse on the night of July 27-28. Get ready!
The main show, when the eclipse becomes total and the red dim moon dips in the Earth shadow, is best visible from Europe (evening at moonrise), Africa, Middle East, India, central Asia (around midnight and through the night), East Asia & Australia (morning at moonset). Totality lasts for 103 minutes! You see it all if in the best visibility regions, where it happen near midnight. In a dark sky location, it begins with a bright full moon with only a few stars visible to a black star-filled sky and glorious summer Milky Way during totality. You will see two red objects in the sky near each other, the eclipsed Moon and Mars at its brightest!
