The French government is considering a controversial plan to bring the study of Arabic out of mosques and into public schools. That touches a nerve in a country that guards the classroom as an incubator for religion-free republicanism and which banned the wearing of headscarves in schools.⠀

Although France is home to one of the world's biggest Arab diasporas, only a fraction of the country's public schools have the resources to offer Arabic courses. Many children attend private schools linked to mosques, where instruction can include memorization of Quranic verses.⠀

Many of the country's Muslims live in suburbs at the edge of cities where unemployment and crime tend to run high. These areas have become recruiting grounds for radical preachers and jihadists who target young Muslims cut off from the rest of French society.⠀

"Arabic courses have become for Islamists the best means of attracting youth in their mosques and schools," said a study published in September by the think tank @institut_montaigne.⠀

But in some areas of France where Muslim minorities are heavily concentrated, local officials and some residents fear the idea will backfire, deepening the cultural divide.⠀
