Behind his blistering trumpet solos, revolutionary vocal improvising and exuberant stage persona, how did Louis Armstrong see himself? Step inside the mind of one of America’s great virtuosos, thanks to a vast archive of his personal writings, home recordings and artistic collages. On one tape, from 1959, a journalist asks Louis about the changes afoot in #jazz. Louis responds: “I just live what I play, and I can’t vouch for the other fellow. As long as I feel and hit the notes and I’ve got my audience, then no critic in the world can tell me how I should play my horn.” Thanks to a $3 million grant from the @fund2foundation, the @louisarmstronghouse has digitized the entire collection he left behind and made it available to the public. @nate_nate took a photo of one of the pieces in the collection. The front image, from the Louis Armstrong Archive, was taken in Louis’s bathroom in 1971 months before he passed away. The background image is his home in 2018.
