It’s a hard rite to explain. About 3 million New Yorkers and tourists stand outside on chilly late-November streets every year. They do so to watch giant inflatable branded cartoon characters, all promoting a department store. More than 40 million viewers join them via television. As much of a head-scratcher as it may be, the @Macy's #Thanksgiving Day Parade, now in its 92nd year, is still going strong. New Yorkers love a #parade, and where New Yorkers gather, New York Times photographers follow. They’re the people who watch the people who watch the inflatable Snoopy or Betty Boop — like in this photo by Librado Romero. What they find is not so much collective gratitude — like the holiday’s name implies – but collective wonder. Visit the link in our profile to see more archival photos of the #macysparade over the years. #tbt
