Virtually every galaxy is thought to contain a supermassive black hole near its center.
In 2013, astronomers using @NASAChandraXray saw the largest X-ray flare ever detected from the supermassive black hole at the center of our Milky Way galaxy. The flare was 400 times brighter than the usual output from the area around the black hole.
It's possible that we saw our local behemoth, known as Sagittarius A* (pronounced "A-star") use its strong gravity to tear apart an asteroid before devouring its remains!
