Bessie Coleman was determined to be a pilot, but in the early 20th century, she couldn't get flight training in the U.S. because of her race and gender. So she went to France.
In 1921, Coleman became the first African American licensed pilot, receiving her license from the Federation Aeronautique Internationale.
She came back to the states and worked toward opening a flying school for African Americans. Coleman had nearly reached her goal when she was killed in a flight accident at age 34.
This photo from about 1924 is in our @airandspacemuseum's collection. #BlackHistoryMonth #BHM
