Bells were among the first metal objects created in China. This bronze bell from ancient China is one of the oldest musical instruments in our collection, dating between 1300 and 1100 BCE, during the Shang dynasty.
It's a larger version of small collar jingles made in north China. It has a hanging loop at the top and might have had a clapper that is now missing.
Bells like this one are typically found in burials in south China, mainly along the Yangzi River, but their original function remains a mystery.
See it, and hear ancient bells come to life in "Resound: Ancient Bells of China" at our @freersackler. #SmithsonianMusic
