? Dwarf lantern shark, doo doo doo doo doo doo ?
(Its scientific name, Etmopterus perryi, is not quite as catchy.)
The dwarf lantern shark is the smallest shark, but it has large eyes that allow it to see in almost complete darkness deep in the ocean.
What makes it a lantern shark? It has light-emitting organs called photophores along its belly and fins. They work as camouflage when the shark feeds in shallower water, as their bodies blend in with sunlight that filters into the ocean.
This mysterious species has only been spotted a few times off the northern tip of South America and this one—from off the coast of Colombia—is in our @smithsoniannmnh.
