Heart-shaped pendants—known as tchor, derived from the French for heart—were a favorite design throughout 20th-century Senegal.
This piece has a central rosette, zigzag filigree, and hollow core—all Senegalese aesthetic techniques. It’s in the shape of a French-inspired heart.
When you consider it within the context of French colonization, this necklace visually represents Senegal’s coexisting and conflicting histories.
It's on view in @nmafa's "Good as Gold" exhibition, the first major exhibition of Senegalese gold jewelry to date that focuses on the history of Senegal’s gold, from past to present, and how Senegalese women use fashion to present themselves. See it through Sept. 29. #GoodAsGold
