Did you know that pack behavior is very common in Canids but is seen far less frequently in other animal families. For instance in the Family felidae, the African lion is the only member to adopt a true pack structure. The Canids include many members that live in a pack structure. Wolves are what most people think of when they think about pack living but dholes and African painted dogs can form even larger packs. Canids like Coyotes and Jackals have also been known to form packs as do several of the South American Canids. While domesticated dogs do not form traditional packs when not attached to humans, they are often found in groups. Perhaps this intrinsic desire to form social bonds is what has given dogs such hypersociability. This feature was also seen in a very special African painted dog.
