The largest U.S. automaker is preparing for a future without cars.

General Motors is taking orders for its new electric bicycle, the Ariv. The investment is just the latest move by a major automaker to broaden its portfolio.

GM and rivals have expanded into scooters, ride-sharing and self-driving cars in an effort to stay relevant in an era where consumers’ transportation choices are changing. Even motorcycle maker Harley-Davidson has unveiled lightweight electric two-wheeler concepts as fears of declining ridership grow.
