17 months ago, the personal information of about 143 million people was stolen in a cyberattack on credit ratings giant Equifax.
The information included Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, information from credit disputes and other personal details.
But the data wasn’t used — it didn’t appear on underground websites selling stolen information, nor was it used in any of the ways experts would expect from a theft like this. Instead, the information simply disappeared.
No one knows where the data is now.
But there’s one possible explanation that experts familiar with the case believe: the thieves were working for a foreign government and are using the information not for financial gain, but to try to identify and recruit spies.
