As 2019 begins to unfold, it brings both feelings of hope and great challenges to the natural world. So let's talk about The Wall for a moment...I know, it's political as can be, but as someone who has worked down there along the existing sections over the past decade, I've seen first hand that it dices up habitat and stops most animal migrations cold. And this is a shame. From bobcats to ocelots, turtles to low flying birds, very little can get past a huge wall, and this has terrible consequences for wildlife because the first step to extinction is genetic isolation. Even monarch butterflies are affected. Realizing how vital it is to keep migration pathways intact, the @nationalbutterflycenter collaborates with the National Park Service to ensure the survival of monarchs on their journey through the Rio Grande Valley. Protecting wild spaces in south Texas is key not only in supporting this species, but in protecting dozens of other animals who call this region home.
