This beautiful mosque lamp was made in Syria between 1330–1345. In the 14th century glassmakers throughout the Middle East produced lamps with stunning enamelled and gilded decoration, giving them brilliant, long-lasting colours.

Many mosque lamps are inscribed with the ‘Light verse’ from chapter 24 of the Quran, which describes Allah as ‘the Light of the heavens and earth’. You can see this dazzling object on display in our new Albukhary Foundation Gallery of the Islamic world, which spans from the 7th century to today.
