The downtown area of Davenport, Iowa, is seen from the air as floodwaters continue flow on May 1. A temporary flood barrier broke on April 30, sending water to near record levels with little to no warning. On Thursday, the National Weather Service (@nws) showed the Mississippi River level at 22.64 feet at the Quad Cities in both Iowa and Illinois, barely above the 22.63-foot mark from July 1993, according to @apnews. Davenport, a city of more than 100,000 people with a 9-mile riverfront, has no permanent levee or flood wall, @dmregister reports. That's by design per the city's flood-control plans, Mayor Frank Klipsch said at a news conference this week, the newspaper adds. "The city has been protected and, for the most part, continues to be protected," he said. "Davenport isn't underwater—it's a portion of it—and that's very important to us."
