Even as days lengthen and temperatures rise in the northern hemisphere, winter is on the march down here in Patagonia and the first snows are blanketing the rugged peaks of the southern Andes. Patagonia National Park is a brand new Chilean national park that protects a range of habitats and wildlife and is part of the spectacular Route of Parks, a network of 17 National Parks, loosely linked by roads and ferries, that runs for 1740 miles from Puerto Montt to Cape Horn at the tip of South America. Its sister park across the border in Argentina, Patagonia Bi-National Park, is also conserving fragile steppe landscape, wetlands, canyons and wildlife from hooded grebes to pumas.
