Roman and I spent the morning and afternoon together, slowly making our way through the exhibit, as Roman recognized the artifacts and recalled memories from his time in the camps. Even as we made our way through with someone who had been there, my brain struggled to grasp the reality of the horrors. “It is unthinkable,” the writer said at one point. Roman responded, “Yes, but the unthinkable happened.” Roman described how every day was like an eternity. “How many eternities can one live in a lifetime?” The exhibit ‘Auschwitz: Not long ago. Not far away.’ opened on May 8th. You can find the full article on our visit at the New York Times website. To the right is an example of the cage technology used to drop gas into the chambers where thousands were killed. // 6 – An example of the cauldrons used to cook soup for the prisoners. Roman described how they were fed once per day, with bread if they were lucky. He would try to time it so that he arrived close to the time the cauldron was empty. That way he would get some vegetables and nutrition (most of which had settled to the bottom). He said if you got there too early you basically were drinking vegetable water. But if you got there too late they could run out and you’d get nothing. // #jewishheritagemuseum #romankent #auschwitz #auschwitzsurvivor #holocaust #holocaustsurvivor #notlongagonotfaraway」5月28日 21時15分 - thephotosociety
