In a visit to Chernobyl years ago (after donning protective gear), I followed a group of workers into the reactor. The radiation levels in this area were so high that access was limited to a maximum of 15 minutes per day. I rushed through dim, debris-strewn tunnels, dodging sprays of sparks and contaminated concrete dust from workers’ drills, all while knowing I had less than 15 minutes to photograph a place I may never access again. A little over halfway through the allotted shift, our Geiger counters and dosimeters began beeping, eerily reminding us our time was up. Torn between my instinct to survive and my desire to continue photographing, I had to work with utmost concentration but without haste. I’m looking forward to watching the next (and final) episode of the Chernobyl mini-series on HBO this coming Monday. It is an amazingly accurate and honest, in-depth account of what happened during the world’s worst nuclear disaster to date.
