This singe-exposure photograph of Mono Lake looking at a little island of tufa was taken far from light pollution in California. These limestone towers are formed by the precipitation of carbonate minerals in water. Mono Lake has no outlet, so the trapped salt made the lake very alkaline and salty. But the lake has an unusually productive ecosystem, including a strange bacteria that has been deeply analyzed by astrobiologists studying the possibility of life in other worlds with extreme conditions.
