Photo by @amivitale | Reticulated giraffe can run as fast as 35 miles per hour over short distances or 10 miles per hour over longer distances. Here they are shown in northern Kenya's Leparua Community Conservancy as a group from the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, Kenya Wildlife Service, San Diego Zoo Global, and the Northern Rangelands Trust put GPS tags on11 giraffe to better understand their migration patterns. Across Africa, giraffe are undergoing what is being termed a silent extinction. The population decline is thought to be caused by habitat loss and fragmentation and poaching, but with the lack of long-term conservation efforts in the past, it's hard to know exactly. Scientists are undertaking major studies to understand why giraffe are disappearing and what can be done to stop it.
