In 2017, Al Franken experienced one of the most abrupt downfalls in recent political memory. Now, seven of the current and former U.S. senators who demanded his resignation say that they’d been wrong to do so. “I don’t denigrate the allegations,” said Angus King, the Independent senator from Maine. “But this was the political equivalent of capital punishment.” At the link in our bio, Jane Mayer reëxamines the allegations, and the ensuing frenzy, that ended Al Franken’s political career.

@ceeswib ya those wins were terrific. Too bad Dems have no idea who they are or what their agenda will be, let alone focusing on what they can actually achieve. Pie in the sky Green Deal says "Elect Trump". You can't just print money to pay for things, otherwise we'd never have a national debt because we'd have just printed more money. Read a little about the countries- say, Argentina - who just printed more money. Hyper-inflation. Dumping Al was a huge mistake. Our brightest male politician. Read the article and I am sure you'll agree. MeToo is necessary but you must allow due process to play out. If it had in his case I am certain he never would have resigned, and nobody would have called for him to resign. Witch hunts never help any process.

To sum this article up, all the accusers were misinterpreting Franken’s touches, but if they weren’t, should’ve kept their mouths shut because his touches weren’t as bad as Weinstein’s & Trump’s criminal actions. Gotta hand it to Mayer - pointing out that an accuser still voted for him is a classic discrediting tactic! Yeah... no. I was a big fan of Franken, but 7 misinterpretations are 7 too many. This article isn’t going to age well in a few years. And Gilibrand may unfairly bear the brunt of the blame of his downfall and this may cost her the presidency run, but again, in a few years, her actions are going to be seen to be on the moral, ethical side of history.

As a survivor of the horrors of a priest, years of therapy, wife of a brilliant man (34 years tested) the mother of 3 kind honest young men, a fierce advocate for oppressed amongst us, I always felt sick that Franken was NOT GIVEN DUE PROCESS. The priest that had me for 2 years was not held accountable until he was already dead... the Democrats, women whose woundedness blinds them to any sense of justice will continue to oppress the MEN WE NEED IN OUR ARENA. Thank you, New Yorker for your continued integrity in the field of investigative news...

A HAND ON THE BACK during a photo op and this awesome guy was pulverized?? Give me a break. It was insane then and now. I am a woman who believes in women standing up for themselves and in the #metoo movement, but boy this took it too far. I have personally met maybe 1,000 men more offensive and misguided and their careers and reputations weren’t lampooned. I really feel sorry for @alfranken He was done wrong.

They were fools to force him out. They need him now more than ever. You think the republicans would ever oust their own?? NEVER. Democrats think they can win by trying to take the moral high ground but right now beating or impeaching trump should hold priority over anything. Not saying he shouldn’t be held accountable for his actions- but that could’ve been handled without his forced resignation.

There were 8 accusations, not 1. Mayer writes as if Tweeden’s was the kill shot, but it was the first of many. For her to ignore the other 7 and only focus on 1 out of 8 is the definition of bias and slanted. If Trump says 8 things and 1 is true, Fox News would focus on the 1 and ignore the 7 lies. It’s biased any way you cut it. Why is Mayer doing this to her reputation? Sad.
