This fierce flier is a Sri Lankan brown fish-owl at the Monticello Center in Italy. Like most owl species, fish owls are nocturnal, but have been known to occasionally hunt during the day, especially when skies are overcast. As their name implies, these birds feed almost exclusively on fish, but will also prey on frogs, crabs, snakes, and lizards. When hunting, the brown fish owl will perch on a rock or tree branch high above the water, and once prey has been spotted, it quickly descends, gliding over the water’s surface using its long legs to snatch its next meal.
