The New York police officer accused of fatally choking Eric Garner in 2014 will no longer be on the police force, NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill announced Monday. "It is clear that Daniel Pantaleo can no longer effectively serve as a New York police officer," he said. Officer Daniel Pantaleo was found guilty in a disciplinary trial earlier this month of using a chokehold on Garner, the New York man whose final words, "I can't breathe," became a rallying cry for the Black Lives Matter movement. Despite the disciplinary trial, Pantaleo has avoided criminal charges in the death. A grand jury in New York declined to indict the officer in 2014, and the city of New York settled with Garner's estate for $5.9 million in 2015. The Justice Department declined to bring federal civil rights charges last month.

That officer belongs in jail, for murder, with a life sentence, just like everyone else. However, as I’ve also watched in horror the high rollers with money, rich white guys who commitment crimes, ruin people’s lives, extort, commit treason, they get to stay home, appear in court and go back home. Then when arraigned, they go to what’s called .”The Campus?” So, as I watched the pretend farce of criminal justice for the rich and the criminal justice for the rest of us lowly fools. I am outraged. I’m terribly sorry, however, being fired doesn’t even come close.

s_d_reese Took damn long enough. And on top of it all, no criminal action because he's a murderer hiding behind a blue shield. AND some other sorry, prejudice, racist police or sheriff department will hire him soon enough. In four months he'll have a new job in law enforcement so he can continue to terrorize people he deems unworthy to live. That's the America we always have been and continue to be.

floretress I watched the tape and I believe this could’ve been avoided. But some cops believe they can do anything to folks... particular black males and get away with it. Being fired should shine a light on the fact that cops can’t abuse their authority on law abiding citizens. Eric Garner said on the tape he didn’t have cigarettes. mariabean20 They all should have been fired. Unarmed man selling cigarettes, it was cruel and unusual punishment for someone who hadn’t even been charged and found guilty. Excessive force by all of them. He is not fit to serve and is not helping anyone in the community treating people that way! And it would not have happened if he was white and we all know it!!!

sarahchidiac Oh wow fired?! He should have been in jail a long time ago. Also, love OITNB and their homage to Garner through Poussey Washington. Both of their “i can’t breathe” still touch me and rile me up to this day and for all the days to come. Rip to everyone sadly killed by policy brutality. This is far from being good news, unfortunately.

christine858 He practiced a method that was not approved to detain this man.. and he gets fired!! Eric told him he could breath.. he needs to be charged with man slaughter.. if Eric would have held Pantaleo in the same manner and he died they would have hung him.. we’re suppose to be satisfied with this decision?? WTF???
