Humpback calves may seem small compared to their massive 50+ foot mothers, but when you consider that they are 10-15 feet when they’re born, they suddenly don’t seem too tiny. For the first few months of their life, the calves will drink around 60-110 gallons of milk a day, which is extremely rich in fat. This will help the calf develop a thick blubber layer, which will keep them warm when they make the long migration to the colder feeding grounds. This little guy was about 2 weeks old when it came to the surface to check us out! He’ll have a lot of growing to do if he is going to be as big as his mother down below!
