Spotted in schoolboy football in his native North Wales, Hughes was apprenticed at United in June 1980 while still 16, and turned pro at 17 that November. His education in the club's non-senior ranks continued for three years, though, before his first-team debut came off the bench in a League Cup win over Port Vale in October 1983, just short of his 20th birthday. A month later came a first start and first goal, by the end of the campaign a foothold in the first team (and a senior Wales cap, with a goal, to boot).
