You can help protect nocturnal fliers like this common bay owl by turning off your outside lights before heading to bed! Owls are equipped to navigate and hunt under the cover of darkness, so by reducing light pollution, you’re making it easier for these birds to roam freely. Found throughout Southeast Asia, the bay owl is easy to identify thanks to its heart-shaped face and ear-like extensions, though you’re more likely to hear this species before you spot it in the wild. Their preferred habitats are woodlands, plantations, and mangrove swamps, where they nest in hollow trees and tree stumps. Once a suitable nesting site has been found, it is often reused over several seasons.
