But do you have the mental fortitude to run up and down a mountain without stopping? Can you pull your own body weight, squat on one leg, or balance on your hands? Can you lift wreckage off of a trapped victim, carry and throw a 110 lb ladder against a burning building, or hang on a ledge by your fingertips until help arrives? When every cell in your body is screaming, you can’t breath, and all you want to do is curl into a ball and die.. can you keep going?

I am a professional athlete, but I don’t just train to play volleyball. I train to realize my ultimate potential in all facets of life. To restrict myself so I fall within parameters that others constructed is only putting limitations on who I can become. I don’t want to be like others. I want to be something that has never been before - I want to be me.

I train to go above and beyond. To dominate in all senses of the word - physically, mentally, and emotionally. That means challenging & testing myself on the daily, doing things outside of the norm, and seeking out discomfort & extremes.

Ultimately - I train like my life depends on it. Because with the fire career I am pursuing, it does. My job will be to help and save others, all while making sure I myself don’t die.

Oddly enough, I’ve always been this way. I’ve noticed over the years that I am quite different in my approach to training than my fellow athletes, and it has taken some time to verbalize that training only for sport is unfulfilling for me. I love volleyball, but I crave more meaning in my life. Professional sport provides a platform to inspire, empower, and lead (which is largely why I do it), but it’s through a career in the fire service that I directly make the impact I desire. With the addition of firefighting, I am closer to using my abilities in entirety and capitalizing on all who I am/ am capable of being.

I train to be the greatest volleyball player I can be. I train to be the greatest firefighter I can be. I train to be the greatest overall human being I can be.
And I train so that when the time comes, and all that I am made of is put to the test, I will be ready.
This is why I do what I do.

Why do you train?
