In eight years on the Moon, Apollo seismometer experiments recorded 12,000 events on a rocky body we had previously thought was done shaking. More recently the Mars Insight lander placed a seismometer on the Red Planet. Now, a Goddard engineer is developing a leaner, simpler seismometer for future missions that will work even if it is not so carefully placed.
In this image, Apollo 12 astronaut Alan Bean carries the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package, including a seismometer, to its deployment site on the Moon.
